Roscoe Agnew
November 2, 2012- March 27, 2023
A.k.a- “Bugga-B”
In December 2012, Megan was 8 months pregnant with her first child John and felt she was missing something to help complete her family! She decided to start checking out rehoming pages and instantly fell in love with a 4-week-old puppy. She named him Roscoe and her best friend he would remain for the next 10+ years! He had the amazing opportunity do lots of traveling with his favorite people; Roscoe has lived in 3 different states and has visited 22! 2 complete cross-country trips and 7 national parks. His family warmly remembers his first time seeing snow at Yellowstone National Park and how much fun was had anytime they went on a family adventure. Roscoe absolutely loved puppacino’s, pizza rolls, and peanut butter. He also loved to swim and his family recalls when they took him Paradise Cove and he saw his first sea turtle, he raced back to shore just to end swimming up in tandem with the bobbing Honu! Roscoe was a special soul and sweet friend, he was known to speak and say “I love you”. Roscoe is so missed by all, especially his mom Megan, Dad Brandon, and siblings John, Haylee and Heather. He is also deeply missed by his fur-siblings, Blizzard and Luna. His family shares, “He was the most perfect dog! The saying ‘if love could have saved you, you would have lived forever’ is 100%.”.
Keona Barientos
August 26, 2007- March 6, 2023
A.k.a- “Opihi, Petutie”
After deciding it was time to get their dog Nani a playmate, the Barientos ‘ohana went to meet a litter of puppies and Mike picked sweet Keona out of the bunch! Though she was the tiniest and cutest, he also noticed her spunk and ability to fend for herself. He decided to name her Keona meaning “God’s gracious gift” and she was sure to live up to her name as she was always a blessing to her family! She earned her nickname “opihi” because she was known to always be on Dyanne’s lap every second she had the chance, but don’t let that fool you… She also liked to play hard to get from time to time. Keona waited patiently for her parents to come home, gazing out the window from her seat on the couch and would excitedly greet them upon their arrival. Though she was her mama’s opihi, dad always got dibbs in greeting kisses. She would then happily make her rounds to mom saying aloha once her siblings were done! Keona wasn’t a picky eater and not a huge fan of toys but did enjoy wrestling around with her brother, Kekoa. It always began with a stare down and evolved into a wrestling match usually ending in Kekoa yelping that he’s had enough and that she had won! They were two peas in a pod, up until the very end. All of the Barientos pups were trained to wait for their meals with the command release being “okay”, and Keona loved the chance to show off her excellent obedience and training. She even went on to win the “top dog” award in her class! Everyone was so very proud of her. Keona was known to play hide and seek in her parent’s bed covers, hearing everyone say “where’s Keona?!” only enticed her to keep playing while leaving everyone around her smiling. Keona was close to her siblings and loved her ‘ohana greatly, even walks resulted in tangled leashes from everyone trying to keep as close as possible! She is so deeply missed and wonderfully remembered by all who knew her. Her family writes, “Keona was beautiful, smart, affectionate, funny and stoic. We have so many special memories of her. We love and miss her so much, and she will always be in our hearts!!! Love, Mike (dad), Dyanne (mom), and Kekoa”
Gracie Barnes
A.K.A Gracie Goo, Goo, Lady, Gratzalina, Graciela, Mama
February 20, 2012 – November 25, 2023
Katie was in Los Angeles with her friend Skyler. They were on their lunch break and decided to look at some cats in a near by pet store. Katie took one look at both Jackson and Gracie & it was clear that they were meant to be with Katie. Gracie was loved by her human family, Katie & Kel, her brother cat brother Jackson who passed away in 2021, her dog bother Harley and her many aunts and uncles who cared for her over the years. Gracie looked like the perfect angel but every once in a while she was a tad bit naughty. One time, Gracie stole a whole slice of pizza and dragged it away backwards. She was also part ninja and had skills at hiding when she was in a new place, even crawling inside a couch and a chimney. Her favorite past times were ripping paper and would fling the pieces around. Gracie also loved playing with laser pointers, hair ties and claiming boxes around the house as hers. Not to mention cuddling up onto her parent’s laps and chest when they would be laying down. Katie & Kel loved when Gracie would run to them when they crouched down & had their arms open. Gracie was the sweetest cat you’d ever meet and so talkative. She would stand in front of the screen door and meow so loudly as her parent’s took Harley for a walk. Gracie was an essential part of Katie’s life; she was there for Katie through two big moves, break ups, career changes and so much more! Gracie is missed greatly.
Yuki Dimaya
November 27, 2008- February 10, 2023
Melissa’s nephew had been dying to see a husky so after finding an ad in the paper for a litter of Husky puppies she decided to set up a visit. Her family had no intention of getting a dog but after a they locked eyes with a puppy sitting quietly as her siblings jumped around in excitement, they suspected that they might be going home with a new addition. After Melissa went to greet her and she walked right over, it confirmed their hunch and they brought Yuki home. When they first got her, she was as white as snow so they decided to name her Yuki meaning snow in Japanese. Yuki was known to have mastered the art of food theft! There were many times over the years that hamburgers have disappeared from their dinner plates later catching her helping herself to her delicious findings. Among stealing burgers she was also known to steal your plated lunch and open up Tupperware to indulge in leftovers. A bag of chips? Easy! She wasn’t a picky eater by any means but among her favorites were apples and bananas. Yuki also loved destroying her squeaky balls and making multiple rounds of “zoomies”! Until unfortunately her arthritis set in. She knew commands like “shake” and “sit” but was most skillful with her judge-y side eye stares! There were so many amazing memories over the years but each time Yuki would wake her mama in the middle of the night with her nose nuzzling into her face or try to sit on her lap thinking she was a small dog are among the most treasured. Yuki remains so loved and deeply missed by all, especially Melissa, Virg, Rylan, Mila, and Aunty Sheila.
Sophie Goyke
Ode to Sophie
My Silly Silly Sophie Girl. You were unlike any other dog I have ever met and I know a lot of dogs. You were uniquely special, silly girl. Today we would have celebrated your 18 th Birthday. You officially
became my furkid 8 years ago when you were around 10 years old and acted three. You jumped baby gates with ease, jumped into the back of my car. Ran like a cheetah on the treadmill, swam with great gusto and lots of splashing. You loved to run zoomies after swim time. I recall it all. You made me laugh so much, so often. It was a joy and a pleasure to have you in my family. And I can’t leave out your love of rides, in the car! You got so amped up just going into the garage! And then in your doggie buggy. Oh, how you loved your buggy rides and how I loved our one-on-one time together every day during buggy time.
Forever in my heart. Love you.
Sam Jones
a.k.a. Sambambino
January 27, 2016 – November 13, 2023
The Jones family had always wanted a English Labrador. After researching they found a great breeder in Tennessee. The Jones family traveled from from their Alabama home to Tennessee to meet the great Sambambino. He was worth the 8 hour drive! Sam lived happily with his family, he especially loved swimming and watching his mom prep food, praying that she would share some yummy steak, popcorn or bell peppers with him. As a puppy, Sam would fall asleep in his water bowl, snoring into the water. The Jones family had a white couch and Sam took full advantage of his family ‘s absence one day and lived his best life on that couch! Sambambino became a tripod, so his family made some adjustments to the command “Shake” and changed it to “sit like a gentleman”. He would sit up on his hind legs and hold his paw up. Sam is missed immensely by his human mom, dad, brother and two sisters.
Chunk Kirby
A.K.A Chunky Boy
September 1022 – November 2023
Chunk was given to Kevin and Chrstine at a young age and lived a great life with them! For 10 years, he roamed his neighborhood with a tiennis ball in his mouth. Boy did Chunk love tennis balls! But he loved steak, running and spending the day at the beach with his family where he would go diving and swimming. Chunky Boy was given the name “Chunk” since he looked like a chunk of butter, Chunky and lovely golden in color. Kevin and Christine loved how Chunk just had a way of being open and friendly to everyone. Although our fur babies can’t talk, Chunk would turn a corner and pole his head through, announcing with his body language “I’m Chunk, here I am!”. Chunk is missed dearly; Kevin & Christine believe all pets are unique and are special to us and our hearts.
Jackie Kurosawa
February 2010 – November 2023
We adopted Jackie from the Oahu SPCA in 2015, after the passing of our beloved, Trinity. We felt that our other dog, Lai Ling, was depressed and needed a furry companion. Jackie was a blessing from above. Lai Ling needed a friend and we didn’t realize it at the time, but Jackie also needed the security she found in Lai Ling. Jackie was afraid and not trusting of us, but eventually learned from Lai Ling that we were not going to hurt her and that she could trust us. Jackie’s way of holding hands was to grab my hand in her mouth when I was walking. Jackie and Lai Ling were partners in crime. Lai Ling would jump up and hit the sliding doors open just enough for Jackie to stick her nose in between the doors and open them so they could both let themselves in the house. We never knew what “Happy Tail” was until we got Jackie. It’s when a dog wags their tail so much that they hit it on something and then the tip starts to bleed. As sad as that is, it showed us how happy she was with us. As hard as it was to say goodbye to Jackie, we knew that Lai Ling was waiting for her and couldn’t wait to make more mischief with her up in heaven. As much as we taught Jackie about love and trust, Jackie also taught us the same. Giving Jackie a big hug and kiss on her forehead every day is what we will miss the most. RIL Jackie-girl.
Lilah Lowry
July 7, 2015 – October 27, 2023
A.K.A- Lolly, Lolly-Dog, “lah-lee”
From the moment the Lowry family met Lilah, they knew it was meant to be. Bryan was set to deploy on military orders right after moving to Oahu. Krista convinced Bryan that they needed to go to the shelter to just “look” at dogs. When they got there, Lilah stuck out to the Lawry family. Lilah was the only dog not barking, as she was laying in a puddle of her own urine looking utterly despondent. The Lowry’s had discovered that Lilah was being fostered but returned earlier that same day. Lilah offered the Lowry family comfort and support while Bryan was deployed. Lilah was the best nanny dog to her human babies; she was so sweet and calm from the moment she met them. Although Lilah was not the smartest or the prettiest dog, her sweet demeanor spoke volumes. Lilah was an adventure dog; she accompanied her family on several vacations and drove across the country. Sweet Lilah loved belly rubs, treats, snuggles and pretending to not understand the “No furniture” rule when guests came over. Lilah will be forever missed by the Lowry family.
Toby 1 Nijhawan
March 2007- May 2023
A.k.a- “Bickens Chittle, Little Bittle Mickens, T-Bone, Mickens Le Bickens”
Before meeting Toby 1, David wasn’t a fan of dogs. It didn’t take but less than 8 seconds for him to change that! Best of friends they would then remain. T-Bone has managed to live in 5 states, visit 28 and 2 countries alongside his person. Fetch was LIFE and he also enjoyed swimming and hiking! His preferred meals involved chicken nuggets, pizza, steak, beef and kale. Toby 1 was known to put on a ballet performance for food and to attack the UPS person, memorable times for everyone involved!
Bickens Chittle was so deeply loved and remains cherished by all, especially his dad David. His favorite fur-pals were Toby 2, Sam, Belmont, Briscoe, Blane, Sammy, Brooks, Glenda Danzig, Petey, Dublin, Le Meinx, and bean. His favorite people were David, Celia, Jen, Jennie, Zach, Renee, Katie, Chris, Christine, Katrina, Sarah, Patrick, Dr. Greer, Michelle, Jennifer, Reya, Jessica, Bre, Hadas, Jason, Tina, Whitney, Chad, Krissy, Andy, James, Keish, Mike, Alex and Wendy. Remembering with love and aloha in our hearts, Toby 1 Nijhawan.
Daisy Ohmura Steitzer
May 17, 2006- June 19, 2023
After being gifted a sweet present from her boyfriend, Marika’s dog soon became Carol’s and a member of the family she would remain. Marika bought the pup a daisy shaped bed, so they decided to name her Daisy! Daisy loved playing hide-and-seek and was skilled at jumping for treats, playing fetch, rolling over and giving high fives. She enjoyed her walks, stuffed bear and dog, squeaky hamburger and tiny hippo. Daisy’s preferred meals included chicken (especially wings!), fish, avocado and broccoli. Daisy was a true princess in nature, she was once given a life vest and attempted surfing. After her 5th time, she began leaping off the board to head back to shore! During camping trips, she would stay inside and as far away from those pesky flies as possible. Daisy loved Christmas time, most of all because she knew to expect a present. She would excitedly open her present and make a toy out of the wrapping paper, rustling it around! Daisy also frequently ran errands with her mom, hidden quietly inside of her bag. No one would know she was in there until they noticed her sweet eyes and button nose! Daisy is so deeply loved and wonderfully remembered by all, especially Carol, Ron, Marika and Haruki.
Sadie Pate
A.K.A Sadie Mae
December 11, 2012 – December 14, 2023
Candy & TJ were blessed to become Sadie & Marley’s new family when their previous family couldn’t keep them after the owner had passed away. Sadie loved her brother, truly an inseparable pair! They did everything together; going to the beach and wrestling after eating breakfast & dinner. Sadie Mae loved socks and shoes just as much as she loved her brother, and would try to hide them. Everyday, Sadie and Marley would sit in the backyard and stare at Uncle Ron, their neighbor, till he came out with yummy treats. They had Uncle Ron trained, for sure! Sadie was the smartest girl and would twirl around in circles before feeding, letting you know how excited she was. Speaking of food, Sadie LOVED food and Starbucks Puppuccino’s. Every single day was cherished and a favorite memory for Candy & TJ, and they believed “she rescued us”. Marley will miss taking walks with Sadie, chasing after birds and crabs.
Oreo Redmond
May 2004- August 2023
A.k.a- “Or”
After a fresh start, Brooke’s family decided it was time to welcome a new member. She was 12 years old when her mom took her to PetSmart and it was love at first sight. They knew this tiny tuxedo kitty was heading home with them! Oreo was a sweet, spunky girl who managed to fit in perfectly. Oreo had a love for her basic toys and scratchers, but forget about catching her attention with anything cute or fancy! Throughout the years, to know and love Brooke was to know and love Oreo. Those who weren’t a fan of cats quickly had their minds changed once they crossed paths with Oreo! She was also known to be the house alarm clock and did her job quite well ensuring that everyone was up and moving at 5:30am with her morning meows – only to decide it was time for her morning nap once everyone was awake. She knew Cody needed extra help, so she took it upon herself to walk on his head in the mornings to signal it was time to get moving! Brooke fondly remembers coming home to her ending her cat naps to get snuggles from her mama. Oreo’s presence is missed by all and is wonderfully remembered by her special people; Brooke, Cody,Brooke’s younger brothers, mom, and pop-pop.
Chiba Rodriguez
September 30, 2008- June 3, 2023
A.k.a- “Cheebs, Tunda”
Back in 2008, a young man presented Jody’s daughter with a puppy. Though mom had no intentions of adopting a new pet, dad and and the rest of the family fell in love. Because the family had just returned from a trip from Chiba, Japan they figured this would be an excellent name for their new companion. Chiba’s favorite foods was carrots, broccoli, banana, apples, basically any type of food. He was even known to lick his chompers after hearing the word, “delicious!”. To say Chiba was eager to please for food would be an understatement.
Chiba enjoyed sleeping in other dogs’ beds! The family then decided to adopt a large dog named Shasta, a German Shepherd mix. Chiba would curl up in Shasta’s large bed, and Shasta would curl up in Chiba’s little bed. Shasta would spit out the banana, and Chiba would eat it! He also loved playing his version of hide and seek, calling the game “seek”! Chiba would wait in another room while a treat was carefully hidden. His ‘ohana would let him sniff their hand and say “seek”. He would run so fast, sniffing every where until he found the item. He would have made an excellent airport TSA dog for his ability to sniff out almost anything. In his older years, Chiba still managed to perk up and join his family in the kitchen to see what was going on. He also enjoyed the company of eldery people, as their gentle motions put him at ease.
Chiba is so deeply loved and wonderfully remembered by all, his family shares “Chiba, we miss you very much and am so grateful you came into our home. You brought us so much joy and love.”
Saddle Sakaguchi
August 2, 2005- July 29, 2023
A.k.a- “Saddle baby”
The Sakaguchi ‘ohana bred their Jack Russel named Dodi and of the litter they decided to keep the runt because of his sweet and gentle nature. They named him Saddle due to markings that resembled a saddle! Saddle went on to be just like his fur-dad Jake, obedient and always beside his loved ones. His favorite trick was allowing his parents to put a treat on his paw and waiting patiently for them to give their verbal approval of “ok” to go ahead and devour! It’s hard to say if he enjoyed the treat more or the praises that came after, either way he loved the whole process!
Saddle lived with his doggie mama Dodie and chihuahua cousin Quincy who loved to steal Saddle’s food. He would sit in front of his bowl and contemplate the best way to outsmart Quincy. Saddle would use the nearby towel to cover his bowl, hiding his food from Quincy and making himself a space just big enough for his snout to dig in and enjoy. His quirky and witty eating habits were the cause for many laughs during mealtimes! In his prime, Saddle was known to have the classic super speed Jack Russel “zoomies”! He was agile, speedy, could out circle anyone, and loved a little friendly competition with fur-cousin Quincy. Mostly because he always won!
Saddle was a beloved fur-baby whose presence was profoundly felt and is missed by all. His most special people and fur-family members were Gale, Myles, Evan, Grandma, Grandpa, Dodi, Quincy and conure Sammy. His ‘ohana warmly shares, “Saddle taught us lessons about patience, gentleness, and obedience but his greatest gift to us was his unconditional love. We love you Saddle baby, forever you’ll be in our hearts.”
Kuro Talon
August 10, 2010- February 5, 2023
Kuro came into this world on August 10, 2010. After being weaned from his mother, he was adopted and sent to live with Mama Rose to keep her company after having lost Papa in 2008. “Kuro” is the Japanese word for black and his ‘ohana found it fitting as he was the only black puppy of his litter. Though at first she wasn’t interested in adopting a dog, Kuro’s gaze was undeniable and the rest is history. Mama Rose and Kuro went everywhere together, frequently strolling the local shopping center and making friends along the way. Leaning on each other for companionship, Kuro would sometimes take Mama Rose on walks throughout Pearl City encouraging them to make more friends because a cutie like Kuro was always an easy conversation starter. Sadly, on October 17, 2019, Mama Rose passed away.
Kuro then came to live with Uncle Dave who made a promise to Mama Rose that Kuro would always be taken care of and in good hands. New to being a dog dad, Dave quickly stepped up to honor his words by taking him on daily walks to familiar places visited with Mama Rose and feeding him a healthy diet. On their walks, both Kuro and Dave found themselves seeing familiar faces and making many new friends. Dave’s remarkable honor to Mama Rose by loving and caring so deeply for Kuro kept him happy and comfortable until Kuro peacefully passed away on February 5, 2023. Papa, Mama Rose, and Kuro are so wonderfully remembered and deeply loved.
Chewy Tamon
May 9, 2012 – October 19, 2023
Just like Han Solo had Chewy as his right hand man, Chewy was Kenny’s right hand man. After Kenny had been introduced to Chewy’s brother, the rest was history for Kenny, Eriko and Chewy. Together, they enjoyed going on walks, car rides, and best of all, cuddles after a long day at work. Chewy was multilingual! He could understand basic trick commands in English, Japanese and Hawaiian. Chewy is dearly missed by all his friends in their building.
Louie Thurman
2005 – 2023
A.k.a- “Lou”
Louie was a rescue who came to join the Thurman family for an amazing second life, serving as the Waikiki doggy ambassador and loving every minute of it. He was the grandpa of his community and met every dog that he possibly could on every walk! Even dogs who had a hard time around other pups felt safe and calm around Louie. He had that affect on both pets and people with his kindness. His family called him their “ready ranger” and loved going on adventures and outings! He had his own travel bag and knew that was his invitation. Louie loved to sing and in his younger days; he was a vertical leaper, a show-off runner, a stuffed toy enthusiast, and always had a “half-back” move ready to go. He also loved his mommy’s home cooking and home made treats! Louie was also an effective neighborhood watch and naturally nosy, watching all the movement and even inspecting bags in the elevator. He was aware and in tune with everything and everyone around him, his presence is profoundly missed by all. Especially his mommy, daddy, Waikiki neighbors and friends, grandmothers, and uncles.
Lai Ling Wong
Lai Ling means trustworthy with an unbreakable spirit. If we could all strive to be like our canine companions.
A week ago today, we said goodbye to our best friend. We adopted Lai Ling 15 years ago from Friends For Life. They told us that Lai Ling was a stray wandering the beaches of Waianae because her owner, who was homeless, passed away. Lai Ling was a sweet, gentle soul with the most sincere eyes. She was nick-named con artist because she did things to trick our other dog, Jackie, into giving up her bed, etc. Lai Ling had a “wanna play” spirit whenever she met other dogs. We feel that she taught Jackie, our other rescue, that it was ok to trust again. Lai Ling in her quiet way, spoke loudly in her actions.
A game that Lai Ling loved to play, and was amazing at, was “Find it”. We would hide treats around the yard and she would use her nose and find each one, in minutes! Lai Ling loved to wake you up if it was breakfast time and you were sleeping too long – she would put her 2 front paws on the bed and stretch as far as she could, to tap you. Lai Ling has definitely been a loving addition to our family and we miss her every day.
Thank you Lai Ling, for bringing so much love into our family and for being best dog buddies with Trinity and Jackie.
